Sponsor Statement

The PNC Financial Services Group is pleased to present an engaging and innovative exhibition, Warhol Legacy: Selections from The Andy Warhol Museum. This exhibition showcases more than 150 works from this renowned institution – one of four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. It is the first time an exhibit of this scale and depth, dedicated to this internationally recognized artist, has been presented in the Greater Washington, D.C. market.

Our underwriting of Warhol Legacy celebrates PNC’s recent entry into the Washington, D.C. area by virtue of its merger with Riggs Bank in May 2005. Riggs’ connection to the Corcoran dates back to the early 1830s when William Wilson Corcoran joined George Washington Riggs to establish “Corcoran & Riggs,” one of the first Washington banks with checking and deposit services. Following one of his personal passions, Corcoran decided to develop a museum of art in 1869, now Washington’s oldest private museum.

The PNC Financial Services Group brings a 150-year tradition of leadership as a respected corporate citizen and recognized supporter of arts and culture. The exhibition is the result of a unique partnership between PNC, The Andy Warhol Museum and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. PNC, headquartered in Pittsburgh, initiated this collaboration as a part of its long-term relationship with The Carnegie. By exporting some of Pittsburgh’s most unique cultural assets, the show promotes a broader understanding of the city’s innovative and creative influence on art.

It is no coincidence that PNC was a catalyst in making this exhibition a reality. Warhol’s art serves a serious function – it makes us look at our world differently, it makes us reconsider the people and things that we know so well. He took the commonplace and the accepted and made them wholly different through his vision and creativity.

Warhol also touched people who were not part of the privileged world of the traditional collector by making his art accessible and appealing to Americans who had never been inside an art museum. He became not only a successful artist; he became a successful marketer and businessman. It is these characteristics along with the contemporary and progressive nature of his art, that connect with and reinforce the personality of the
PNC brand.

PNC is proud to be the presenting sponsor of what promises to be one of the most important art exhibitions in Washington, D.C. this year.
