PHOTOGRAPHY OFFERINGS AT THE CORCORAN COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Corcoran College of Art + Design offers exceptional degree programs in the field of photography for undergraduate students. The Corcoran’s two majors—fine art photography and photojournalism—stress creativity, cultural context and critical analysis while teaching its students the current processes for making photographic images—from traditional “wet” black-and-white and color to digital still and video imaging.

“Photography is a medium for documenting the world, for interpreting and commenting on human life and culture, for personal expression and for finding one’s own artistic vision,” said Andy Grundberg, chair of the photography programs at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. “These paths often intermingle, which is why the Corcoran’s Photography Department offers an inclusive, integrated curriculum that covers a broad range of technical, practical, and aesthetic possibilities.”

The Corcoran College of Art + Design’s photography programs offer a one-of-a-kind combination of professional education and museum-school environment. Students learn current darkroom practices, historical processes and the latest digital image making techniques. They apply these skills to subjects and concerns of their own choosing, including documentary, experimental and subjective approaches.

“Through its photography programs, the Corcoran College of Art + Design is producing a generation of photographers with the skills to work in a wide variety of jobs—from shooters to photo editors—and photographers who are able to interpret as well describe the state of the world,” Grundberg said.

Drawing directly upon the unique media resources of the nation’s capital, the Photojournalism program is an ideal training ground for a new generation of newspaper and magazine photographers and videographers. The photojournalism faculty consists of working professionals from Washington, D.C., representing media outlets such as the National Geographic, The Washington Post, and U.S. News and World Report. In addition to active photojournalists, students interact with fine-art faculty as part of the program.

Fine art photography students have the benefit of a major museum as their campus, one that has been internationally acclaimed for its innovative exhibitions and pioneering collection of photography. Students work with an experienced faculty that is deeply committed to the photographic medium as a powerful tool of personal expression.
