Washington, DC - The Corcoran College of Art + Design presents its 20th
annual Print Portfolio, produced by the students and faculty of the Printmaking
Department. The theme of this year’s Print Portfolio is “20/20
VISION” is a tribute to the project’s twentieth year and the collection
will be on view at the District Fine Arts Gallery in Washington, D.C. from
December 17, 2004 through January 8, 2005.
Each fall, 30 to 35 students and faculty select and creatively interpret the
theme for the portfolio. Most often, the theme reflects current events, such
as the tragedies of September 11th, the end of the millennium and cultural
strife associated with the Corcoran’s Mapplethrope exhibition controversy.
More than 31 students and faculty participated in this year’s portfolio
and have been involved in all aspects of its production, including editioning
of individual artworks, design of the title sheets, portfolio case and invitation
design, and exhibition design and logistics.
Begun in 1986 as a student/faculty
collaboration, the Print Portfolio project was intended to challenge the students
with a professional and creative experience.
It was shown in the Gallery K in Washington, D.C. and featured 19 artists.
Today, the portfolio will include print works by Corcoran BFA students, Continuing
Education students, faculty and guest artists. Many past portfolios have
been purchased for both private and public collections; including the post-September
11th “FEAR, FATE & FAITH” portfolio that resides in the Library
of Congress.
“The creation of the portfolio is a great accomplishment for my students
and peers,” said Georgia Deal, chairperson of the Corcoran College of
Art + Design’s Printmaking Department. “It is always a beautiful
sight to see the artists laying out these perfectly printed editions and gives
me such satisfaction to see their hard work come to fruition.”
“20/20 VISION” includes examples of all printmaking media taught
in the Corcoran classes – etching, drypoint, lithography, screenprinting,
letterpress, papermaking and relief and digital printing.
The exhibition will run from December 17, 2004 through January 8, 2005 at
the District Fine Arts Gallery located at 1726 Wisconsin Ave NW. The hours
of the Gallery are Tuesday-Sunday from 11:00 am through 5:00 pm. An opening
reception will be held on Friday, December 17 from 6-9 pm.
