Stripped Exhibition Cut Short Under Doctor's Orders
Artist Ends Installation
WHAT:
Melissa Ichiuji, a current junior of the Corcoran College of Art + Design,
will present STRIPPED, a non-performance piece that she began to live on
January 1, 2005 that will culminate in front of the Corcoran Gallery of Art
beginning May 10, 2005. For 36 hours, Ms. Ichiuji will sit outside the Museum
on a platform with nothing but a blanket and juice.
Ms. Ichiuji began her journey on January 1 this year when she decided to gradually
wean herself from addictions and dependencies for 16 weeks. She began immediately
in January by cutting out coffee, television and medication. Later in the February,
she cut out fast food and alcohol. Then, in March she began to let go of cosmetics
and chocolate. In April, she cut out meat, magazines, movies and color. In
May, she let go of her remaining vices which included her cell phone, newspapers,
music, mirrors, e-mail, computer, books, family, friends, sex, running water,
appliances, speech, clocks, shoes, food, shelter, driving, speaking and human
touch.
Lastly, beginning on May 5 she will live outside in a tent in her yard with
the bare minimum to survive and then move to the Corcoran on May 10 for the
final 36 hours.
