Retailer to provide furniture for College’s new Library

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Corcoran College of Art + Design is pleased to formally announce its partnership with Design Within Reach (DWR), the San Francisco-based retailer of modern design furniture and accessories. The Design Within Reach Studio in Adams Morgan has kindly coordinated the donation of furniture estimated at more than $20,000 to outfit the new Library for the Corcoran College of Art + Design housed within the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

“We are so very happy to be making this donation to the College’s new and updated Library. The Corcoran is an important partner in the art and design community in the Washington area and beyond, and we can’t imagine Washington, D.C. without them,” said Suzanne McLees, Proprietor of Design Within Reach – Adams Morgan.

As part of this very generous donation, the Library will be dressed up with Caper chairs from Herman Miller, Quovis working tables, Kite chairs and Frank Gehry’s Superlight TM chairs. In addition, a Panton chair, a Phillippe Stark Bubble Club armchair and various lamps will be placed in the Library’s reading room.

“We are very thankful to Design Within Reach for making our Library so cool and well designed,” said Christina DePaul, Dean of the Corcoran College of Art + Design. “The Interior Design Program at the Corcoran has shown extraordinary growth since launching in September 2004 and our students will be extremely instrumental in shaping the future of the Washington design community. By engaging with local design partners in the private sector, we are enhancing the learning opportunities for our students and building important relationships that will prove very valuable in the future.”

This partnership expands upon a series of collaborations between the Corcoran and Design Within Reach. This year, Design Within Reach’s Adams Morgan Studio loaned several key furniture items for use in the Corcoran WPA/C Options show.

Design Within Reach, which also has Studios in Georgetown, Bethesda, MD and more than 50 others across the country, provides easy access to well-designed modern furnishings and accessories traditionally found only in designer showrooms. The company’s local Studios also serve as a hub for the local design community by hosting regular events and speakers. The College’s own Chair of Design, Catherine Armour, will present a special lecture at the Adams Morgan Studio on March 21, 2006.

Ms. Armour oversees the Design and Interior Design departments at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. The holder of degrees from Princeton and Middlebury College, Ms. Armour is very well established in her field. Prior to joining the College faculty, Ms. Armour headed her own firm for seven years, overseeing the design of commercial as well as residential projects. Before launching her own business, she spent four years with Cannon overseeing a number of high profile design projects and two years as Design Director for the Interior Studios at Michael Graves Architect.
