WASHINGTON, DC – An exhibition of award-winning artwork from The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a national program offering early recognition of some of the most creative and talented teenagers in the country and providing scholarship opportunities for graduating high school seniors, is on view at the Corcoran Gallery of Art from June 30 through August 6, 2006.
Representing 14 visual arts categories, including photography, painting, sculpture, graphic design and digital imagery, the National
Student Art Exhibition of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2006 features 344 artworks, including the work of three students from the greater Washington region who were among 12 young artists nationwide to receive top honors from The Awards program.
Each year, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, administered by the non-profit organization Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, receives more than 250,000 works of art and writing by students in grades 7-12 from across the nation. The entries are evaluated locally and then approximately 17,000 works are sent to New York for national evaluation by panels of jurors comprised of renowned artists, authors, educators and arts professionals. For the past 83 years, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the talents of promising youth who have gone on to become some of our nation’s most celebrated artists and writers, including Robert Bechtle, Truman Capote, Joyce Carol Oates, Philip Pearlstein, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford and Andy Warhol.
This year, 12 high school seniors from around the country were honored with the National Portfolio Gold Award, the highest level of achievement, and each received a $10,000 scholarship. An additional $1.5 million in tuition scholarships is made available to students, both regionally and nationally, through a network of colleges who collaborate with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
“Identifying natural talent and encouraging these promising students to explore different forms of expression at such a crucial age is what this program is regarded for doing,” notes Christina DePaul, Dean of the Corcoran College of Art + Design. “Giving budding artists a chance to display their work in this distinguished exhibition provides an important validation.”
“The Alliance is devoted to providing guidance and support to young artists and writers for whom creativity is a life path. The
National Student Art Exhibition is a compelling representation of the exceptional promise of today’s young artists, honoring their talent and providing a unique opportunity to display their work at the Corcoran Gallery of Art – one of the nation’s most prestigious museums,” said B.J. Adler, executive director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.
According to the late Richard Avedon, one of the world’s most famous photographers and a 1941 recipient of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, “The defining moment in my life was when I was 17 and was honored by The Scholastic Awards. Being recognized meant that little pat on the back, that little sense of confidence that made me feel the doors were opening, and I could enter a life that I loved, and I had somebody behind me saying, this is OK.”
Since the program’s inception in 1923, more than 13 million of America’s most talented junior high and high school students (grades 7-12) have participated in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, and 2.5 million have been recognized and shared in more than $25 million in cash awards and college scholarships.
