Free symposium part of James Renwick Alliance Craft Weekend, Celebrating American Craft
WASHINGTON, DC – Since the early days of the Renwick Gallery, the James Renwick Alliance sponsors an annual Spring Craft Weekend. A symposium entitled, Crafting Environments: Public Spaces and Private Homes, and moderated by Jane Milosch, Curator of the Renwick Gallery, will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2006 from 10 am to 1 pm, at the Renwick Gallery. The symposium is free and open to the public.
Symposium speakers include:
- Catherine Armour, Chair of Design Department at Corcoran College of Art + Design (CCA+D), Washington, DC
- Susan H. Harrison, Director, Art-in-Architecture Program, Public Buildings Service, General Services Administration, Washington, DC
- Albert Paley, artist, Rochester NY
Ms. Armour has extensive knowledge in the field of design. Ms. Armour possesses degrees from Princeton University and Middlebury College, has worked as director of Interiors Studio at Michael Graves, Architect and leads the Design and Interior Design departments at the Corcoran College of Art + Design, which includes three degree programs and numerous design-focused Continuing Education (CE) certificate programs and CE classes. Past professional clients include: The World Bank, Disney, Las Vegas Clark County Public Library, Vassar College and The National Cathedral School. Additionally, Armour curated and designed the exhibition, The Furniture of Frank Gehry, which was on view at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 2004.
Ms. Harrison has overseen the commissioning and installation of more than 130 works of art and currently manages 70 acquisition projects. Ms. Harrison possesses degrees from the University of Virginia, School of Architecture and the University of California at Berkeley. Ms. Harrison chairs the Art in Architecture Program of the General Services Administration, which commissions artists to create works of art for U.S. Court Houses and federal buildings.
Mr. Paley is a sculptor who has had work exhibited in museums around the world. Mr. Paley’s sculpture, Epoch, is currently located at 701 9th Street, NW, Washington, DC and his Portal Gates sculpture was installed in the Renwick Gallery in 1974. He possesses BFA and MFA degrees from Tyler School of Art at Temple University and is currently a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York.
This year’s symposium is inspired by the Renwick Gallery’s exhibition, Grant Wood’s Studio: Birthplace of American Gothic. Other Spring Craft Weekend activities include: a Gala Dinner and Craft Auction, a Sunday morning brunch and presentation of the Distinguished Educators Awards.

ABOUT THE CORCORAN GALLERY OF ART
The Corcoran Gallery of Art was founded in 1869 as Washington’s first museum of art. It is a privately funded institution incorporating both a Museum and College of Art + Design. As one of America’s oldest art institutions, the Corcoran is known internationally for its distinguished collection of historical and modern American art, as well as European painting, sculpture, photography and decorative arts.
Founded in 1890, the Corcoran College of Art + Design is Washington’s only four-year college focusing on the arts. The Corcoran Gallery of Art is located at New York Avenue and 17th Street, NW, Washington, D.C. and is open Wednesdays – Sundays from 10 am – 5 pm and until 9 pm on Thursdays. The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but open on holiday Mondays. Admission to the Corcoran is: $8 for adults; $6 for senior citizens and U.S. military personnel; $4 for students with current ID and $3 for Member guests.
