21st Annual Corcoran College of Art + Design Print Portfolio
Thinking Vodoo
On view April 15 to May 27, 2006 at the Kathleen Ewing Gallery

April 15, 2006–May 27, 2006

Opening Reception to be held on Friday, April 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm

WASHINGTON, DC – The Corcoran College of Art + Design is pleased to present the twenty-first annual Corcoran Print Portfolio. This year’s portfolio contains the work of Corcoran College of Art + Design faculty and students from the BFA and Continuing Education programs. We are also proud to present the amazing work of guest faculty and artists. This year we have included work by Frank DiPerna, Claudia Smigrod and Renee Stout. Thinking Voodoo will be on view from April 14 to May 27, 2006 at the Kathleen Ewing Gallery at 1609 Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC.

Portfolio participants meet during the Fall semester to select a theme and structure for each portfolio. Most often the themes reflect current events and news in which the artists are reacting. Following the Maplethorpe controversy at the Corcoran Gallery in 1989, participants chose the theme, Contents Under Pressure. In 2001, Fear Fate & Faith was the title of the portfolio in response to the events of September 11th. As the city of New Orleans is historically linked to the practice of voodoo and the supernatural, Thinking Voodoo seemed an appropriate title for this year’s portfolio following the events of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath of destruction.

The Corcoran has one of the largest and most comprehensive printmaking programs in the Mid-Atlantic region. The printmaking faculty are nationally recognized artists, educators and master printers who conduct workshops and lectures throughout the U.S. and abroad. All three of the College’s majors of Fine Arts, Graphic Design and Photography are represented in the department.

Twenty-nine artists are represented in this year’s exhibition with work ranging from traditional intaglio and relief, to more experimental forms, including digital screen printing, photo-etching and lithography, to mixed media techniques.

One copy of the full portfolio is placed in the permanent collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Corcoran College of Art + Design and the College Printmaking department, however copies of the work will also be on sale.

The opening reception for Thinking Voodoo is Friday, April 14 from 6 to 8 pm at the Kathleen Ewing Gallery. This reception is open to the public.
