The Eyes of History
Award-Winning Photographs by Members of the White House News Photographers' Association

July 19, 2006–August 17, 2006

Washington, DC — Showcasing the work of the nation’s most distinguished group of photojournalists – the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) – The Eyes of History features compelling images of the year’s top news stories. As part of the annual WHNPA photojournalism competition, the winning photographs capture a broad spectrum of human emotion and show a variety of poignant moments. From Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Kashmir to the Iraq war and the triumphs and hardships faced by ordinary people, the photographs tell important stories about the humanity of public and private figures from around the world. In its sixth year at the Corcoran, The Eyes of History is on view at the Museum from July 19 through August 17, 2006.

Washington Post photographer Andrea Bruce was named Photographer of the Year, an honor she also received in 2003 and 2005. Highlights of Bruce’s portfolio included a picture story on the earthquake in Kashmir, Pakistan, as well as images from funerals at Arlington Cemetery. Political photo of the Year was awarded to freelance photojournalist Carol T. Powers for her image “Vulnerable,” which captured House majority leader Tom DeLay at a news conference on Capitol Hill.

The Corcoran College of Art + Design and the White House News Photographers Association entered into a collaborative partnership in February 2001. Drawing on WHNPA photojournalists to serve as faculty, the College launched a four-year BFA degree program in Photojournalism. The BFA program provides students with unprecedented access to the many powerful news making venues in the nation’s capital, offering them a rare opportunity to learn how to use their skills creatively and expressively in one of the most competitive professional environments in the world.
