The FRIENDS is a volunteer arm of the Corcoran,
which was founded in 1961 to focus attention on contemporary
American art at the Corcoran. Since its inception, the FRIENDS
have made significant contributions to the Corcoran’s world-renowned
permanent collection and helped Washingtonians gain a new appreciation
for and understanding of contemporary art. The FRIENDS acquisition
of contemporary art carries on the tradition of William Wilson
Corcoran, who was an early collector of American contemporary
art.
Who we are and what we do:
We are volunteers who strongly believe that the
Corcoran is an exciting art venue in our city. We like to have
fun while furthering our mission and hosting interesting, informative,
and, at times, cutting-edge programs. The FRIENDS sponsor well-known
events including lectures, gallery tours, and trips that are attended
by a diverse group of people who enjoy learning about and supporting
contemporary art. Many of our events are special members-only exhibition
previews allowing FRIENDS to experience an exhibition before it
is available to the general public. We believe that participation
in our programs provides FRIENDS the opportunity to expand and
enrich their knowledge of contemporary art, to meet others who
share their interests, and to make lasting friendships.
We are fully committed to:
- Encouraging and promoting contemporary art,
emerging artists, and the Corcoran College of Art + Design;
- Sponsoring art exhibitions and educational
outreach programs; and
- Purchasing contemporary works of art for the
permanent collection of the Corcoran.
Our Signature Event:
Each year, the FRIENDS sponsor a large, exuberant
event called ArtCentric. Proceeds from ArtCentric assist the
FRIENDS with its purchase of an annual donation of contemporary
art for the Corcoran.
