Teaching Through 21st-Century Art

This workshop, organized around contemporary artworks in the Corcoran Gallery of Art’s permanent collection, seeks to familiarize 4–12 teachers with effective, innovative, and interdisciplinary methods of integrating contemporary artworks, themes and visual culture into their teaching. Activities include viewing artworks, exploring the term “contemporary,” discussions, writing, and art making.

A Teacher Workshop on Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales
This internationally acclaimed collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art features masterpieces by Paul Cézanne, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, J.M.W. Turner, and Vincent van Gogh. Join us to explore some of the key stylistic innovations that shaped the art of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The program includes gallery and hands-on activities, resources for educators and refreshments.Registration is required.

Connecting Art and History

Explore America’s cultural history through paintings, sculpture, and other works of art in the Corcoran’s collection. Look at Western expansion, the Gilded Age, the Great Depression and other major issues and movements in our country through the eyes of artists. Hands-on activities, educator resources, and refreshments are included.

Modern Art, Modern Life and the Idea of Modernism—Clarifying what “Modern” Means Across the Curriculum
Saturday, April 17, 2010  9 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
This workshop explores the many concepts and definitions associated with the terms “Modern/ism” in art, history, language arts, and social studies. Through the examination and discussion of modernist artworks, participants will sort out the various meanings for clarity without sacrificing the rich, complex connotations of each to art and to life.
